When to Consider a Speech Therapy Referral
A child may benefit from a speech therapy evaluation when they have concerns related to:
- Expressive language, including communicating wants, needs, and ideas.
- Receptive language, including understanding words, directions, and questions.
- Speech sound development and intelligibility.
- Social communication and interaction.
- Functional communication, including gestures, signs, and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC).
- Communication differences associated with autism or other developmental disabilities.
An evaluation can help determine a child's communication strengths, needs, and potential next steps.
